Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Hong Kong situates at the southeastern tip of China. It has a total area of 1100 square kilometers, which covers Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories and 235 outlying islands. Though our city is small in size, we have one of the finest deep-water ports in the world, the Victoria Harbour. Besides, Hong Kong is also an international financial, trading and business center. It is also well known for its efficiency, transparency and fairness.

Hong Kong is famous for both food and tailoring. Hong Kong is famous for tailoring. The mass production of the tailoring industry in factories had established since the 1980s. On the other hand, the custom-made clothing industry had been started much earlier. It is also popular even until now! By the way, do you recognise that you may be also a tailor for yourself? You can find out the development of tailoring industry in Hong Kong. Dai Pai Dong is an open-air traditional food store of Hong Kong.D ai Pai Dong is very memorable to many people. Not only the memories, it’s also a kind to food culture of Hong Kong.

2. Summary of Our Project

Dai Pai Dong is an open-air traditional food store of Hong Kong. It’s once very popular but since 1970s, government began to purchase back the licenses from the owners and stopped continuing the license after the owner is dead. As the result, the number of Dai Pai Dong have been kept on declining. Up to Feb, 2006, there’re only 28 Dai Pai Dong left. Dai Pai Dong is very memorable to many people. Not only the memories, it’s also a kind to food culture of Hong Kong. As we can see that, we think it’s worth to keep the memorable Hong Kong food culture for the next generation, including us. In the web page, we are going to show you the history, features, visit and interview…… to show it’s worth to keep the Dai Pai Dong. Tailor is a specialty for making garments. Clothes are particularly tailored for an individual. When thinking of the best tailoring, Britain probably is the first choice, and then comes Hong Kong. Hong Kong is famous for tailoring. The mass production of the tailoring industry in factories had established since the 1980s. On the other hand, the custom-made clothing industry had been started much earlier. It is also popular even until now! By the way, do you recognise that you may be also a tailor for yourself? You can find out the development of tailoring industry in Hong Kong, the reason why tailoring is so famous that even the foreign celebrities come to Hong Kong for it, or maybe learn some tips on tailoring by yourself in our site.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We have to do the project against time. We tried our very best to do research instead of having family days in the weekends. Apart from the limited time, we also had problem on choosing the topic. To decide an appropriate topic is very time consuming. At the beginning, we would like to introduce some special foods in Hong Kong style restaurants and also the tailoring industry in Hong Kong, so we selected 'local specialties' as our topic.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We use flash and html to design web pages.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We learned new I.T. skills (e.g. how to trim videos, sound editing).Skills that we have learnt in the technology criteria include the use of digital cameras and video recorders. We also become more familiarized with web page editing software such as Frontpage, Dreamweaver and Flash.
