Project Overview

1. Description of Our Team

We are four students who have not resisted the challenge of participating in this contest even if we are twelve graders and are to sit a difficult exam at the end of this school year. Since we are so absorbed with homework and study we have decided to push our limits to the end. We have got “there”, exhausted and content. We are all girls, Andreea Sida, Catalina Ursut, Andreea Dragos and Hermina Vicol.,all students in a bilingual class. After much “storming and norming”we have divided equal chores among ourselves. Andreea S. is the web designer who has dedicated all her time to the technological part and to creating what you see now, while the others have done research and interviewed students and teachers. We have to admit that inspiration has played an important role in our planning of the work.. Our site is based on random work, each of us choosing six personalities to research about. We have also benefited from Victor Guset’s help, our schoolmate, who has provided the translations. Moreover, we have got all the support from the pupils of other classes who have been kind enough to answer our surveys. We should not forget to mention our teachers, Livia Marinescu and Adrian Bucur, who have supervised the entire process of creating this website. Due to their contributions we have been able to interview several other teachers from different high schools of Arad.

2. Summary of Our Project

The project focuses on great leaders of the past whose ideas and achievements had a great impact on the world they lived in. The title of the project is 'FROM HERE TO ETERNITY'. We aim at highlighting the changes that occurred in the society under the influence of several world leaders. The short presentations of these leaders will identify the skills, the ideas and ethical standards these leaders held dear.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

One of the basic problems we had to overcome was the short period during which we had to gather and put together a great amount of information. We have delayed our work due to the fact that we have to prepare for an important final exam. However, our team members managed to dedicate their spare time to completing this site. Also we encountered difficulties while translating texts from our language into English. More problems we encountered with the design of the page which has been changed several times. Although we are not specialists and we have never studied in class how to design or create a web site we have eventually managed to reach an agreement and there you have it!

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We have decided on diplomacy and leadership and chosen to focus on leaders of the past because we couldn’t discover a true leader nowadays and we felt the urge to show the world what actually makes a good ruler. At the same time, we wanted to remind the world that the thirst for power and the abuse of power can affect the real meaning of leadership. We wanted to shed a new light upon some of the great world leaders. Those great men of yesterday, who created today’s world, should not be forgotten. We find the issues of leadership and diplomacy extremely important and relevant for today’s world. Teenagers should be properly informed about the past for they will be creating tomorrow’s world.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This project was not completed as part of the school curriculum. However, it can serve as teaching material for history classes as it contains biographical background about several of worldwide known personalities. The content standards of our project were those stipulated by the Doors to Diplomacy committee. Our teachers also provided us with the necessary extra information. Our main content standards consisted of background, introduction and conclusions, as well as precise content and credible sources. The educational system of our country was not directly involved, but the school environment gave us the opportunity to receive guidance. Getting involved in this project has thought us not only the basic technical skills in building a webpage, but also a few things about teamwork, cooperation and communication. It gave us the opportunity to exercise creating and managing resources as well as processing information in such a way as to have an impact on the target group. Using the Internet transformed working on the project in an interacting way of learning a rather dull subject such as history. The team members have gained a considerable amount of information about the world of yesterday. Last, but not least, we have learned how to work for pleasure with people who are kind and generous, if given a chance.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Technological tools have played the most important role in creating our site. Each team member has their own PC and internet access. In addition, we occasionally used school equipment for researching information. Our web designer used Macromedia Dreamweaver 8, Flash MX, Microsoft Power Point, Camtasia, Photoshop Pro 8, AcdSee Pro 8, Picasa 2 and 3d Studio Max 7. We used Macromedia Dreamweaver for building the entire web site from templates to different special effects and AcdSee and Microsoft Photoshop for editing pictures and background. The information was mainly gathered form the internet but we also used books and newspapers and several persons accepted to be interviewed on leadership issues.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

First of all, we shared our project idea with our classmates, and some of them actually offered to help. Our team members have also conducted a survey among the students of various local schools, a survey concerning issues of leadership and diplomacy. This was also a way of promoting our site. Moreover, this entire project is meant to identify the characteristics of a good leader and to offer teenagers a set of role-models in this respect.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We hope that our site has managed to cast a new light upon the achievements of past leaders. We also consider that due to the biographical information contained, it could also help those who visit our website enrich their general knowledge or prepare for class. The Students Council in our school has asked us to present our project in front of the students’ representatives and teaching staff and inform them on its practical uses in class. The project will receive media coverage as soon as it has been completed and information about it will be found on our school site. In this way, we will be able to get more feedback and suggestions for the students of our school who will participate in next year’s contest .In this way we will be able to promote the project for the future.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

This project managed to involve quite a large party of people due to the survey we conducted. Several groups of students, both from our high school and from other local high schools, were very kind to answer our questions. Some of our teachers, Mrs. Vancu Rodica and Mrs. Iancovici Alexandra, as well as the leader of a local youth organization, Sorin Victor Roman, agreed to answer a few questions regarding leadership and diplomacy. The Students Council has also been supportive.
