Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our hometown, Changhua is on the central part of Taiwan. Mt. Bakua is the most famous scneic spot in Changhua and it is also a place that poeple teach and learn Taichichuan. It is very interesting that there are many different styles of Taichichuan. As Taichichuan is passed down from generation to generation, it has developed in different ways. This means a person who wants to learn Taichichuan now has a variety of styles he can choose from.

2. Summary of Our Project

“Taichichuan” is one of the world-famous kung-fu styles. The kung-fu style of “Taichichuan” is not only related to the central idea of “Taichi” but also includes the knowledge of “Ba-kua” and “Wu-hsing”. The concepts of 'Taichi' are firm but also gentle, active but also slow and steady. It comprehends the wisdom of “Tao” by practicing these skills. Practicing “Taichichuan' not only strengthens our body or prevents illnes but also enriches our mind. Anyone can learn Taichichuan. There is no restriction as to one's age or gender. Furthermore, it doesn’t require expensive equipment. This is why “Taichichuan” is popular. Through our project, we hope we can hlep you know more about Taichichuan!

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

At the beginning of editing our web pages, the first problem we have to overcome is the lack of time. We started to construct it at the beginning of summer vacation. We had completely no idea about that. So we wasted much time. But, I think this is the chance to add up our experience. And now, it is much easy to deal with these problems. While the summer vacation was over, the difficulty doubled because we have to go back to school. The time we could use is less than before. So we have to construct web pages and study at the same time. The other problem is the work didn’t allot to everybody equally. Some of us are busy working, but others are playing online games. And the team leader is even busier. She has to give suggestions and instructions to us, and to stop people from playing games. Works were usually not finished at the deadline. Our team is not active and not united. These are the biggest problems we had overcome. At the end of our project, everyone became much more active and united.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Taichichuan is a style of mysterious Chinese martial art. In rumors, people who're good at it always best others by silent, soft, slow but surprising movements. Nowaday, Taichichuan is still used as a kind of sport. It is so popular in Taiwan becuase it makes people healthier and strengthens their bodies. Are you curious about it? Check this out!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Taichichuan is a very good sport, it gives students another choice for pastime. The PE course can also combine with it. We also learned new skills: skills of editing web pages, using digital camera and scanner, designing, and dealing with people. However, we also realized the importance of time. Time is money. People who can control their time well can also control their fortune. in addition, we discovered that team cooperation is really important. With others, we can do many things that we cannot done by ourselves. The internet is very useful. It makes us much easier to get information and to contact with others.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

PC x 42 (AMD 350 x 15, AMD 700 x 27) Printers x 2 digital cameras x 3 scanner x 1 newspapers(TVBS News, Li-tai Sports) Oral Interviews x 7 digital sound recorder x 1 Most of our data is from oral interviews. We'd met many local Taichichuan masters and shared their experiecne. The digital sound recorder was seldom used, but it is useful to do a detailed record of a interview since we've discovered that we're unable to identify our terrible hadwriting +_+.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We disseminate the information to our classmates and let them take a part in it. Some of them offered digital equipments, some of them offered information. Our principal also helped us a lot. He permitted us to borrow any of the digital equipments from school at any time.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We believe our web pages can make people in Changhua know more about Taichichuan and give people who want to learn Taichichuan a source of information. We try to present new things of our community by interviewing local masters of Taichichuan and introducing some local associations of Taichichuan. We established new working relationships with the association of taichichuan and the taichichuan center in Changhua City. Even one of the eldest masters and the founding president of the association are eager to see taichichuan can be on the Internet and be shown to the world. We did our best translating their wisdom into English, but it is not an easy work. If they didn't keep supporting and encouraging us, our project may not be done on time.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

A teacher in our school is the mother of teacher Yi-gi Wu(a teacher of Taichichuan). So, it made us LOT much easier contact local taichichuan masters. They were all very kind. And they even taught us to perform Taichichuan sometimes! Master of Taichichuan doesn't appear like a fighter. Maybe it can show that Taichichuan is a really soft style of martial arts.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We discovered the beauty of traditional Chinese martial art. What's more, we’ve learned that the time is so important. And we’ve been surprised at the broadness and deepness of Taichichuan. There’s still so much to learn.
