Project Overview

1. Description of Our Team

We are a group of 4 and age from 16 to 17, there are three people in charge with all the data. Because of collecting data about Gene is not easy, therefore, we asked for help from our school nurse. She offered us lots of professional information and help. And one of the students is in charge with the website structure and flesh. Our Coach, Ms. Shih, she put all the data together and in order, and directed us how to finish each process. This project involved with financial and Gene Tech, and teachers shared lots of great and helpful professional opinions. Especially when Mr. Haung made a convenient software for the survey. So thankful to all the team members, this project can be done all have to rely on all the hard-working members.

2. Summary of Our Project

In the year 1906, Biologist Day Poker and the Bacteriologist of Colombia University, Rolea opened the gate of studying genetic science through discovering the fact that the genetic substance in the Escherichia coli Bacteriophage possessed the characteristic of duplicating itself, which was also called Gene. Though numerous efforts of the scientists devoting themselves to this new science; however,it was often obstructed by conservatives in the course of its development. We are eager to know:Due to the rapid development of life science, scientists have made every effort in decoding genes. And the control over such decoding techniques very often becomes the prime subject of international discussions. The genetic engineering applied to agricultural products has triggered overwhelming objections against genetically modified foods. Either directly or indirectly,it has affected the international trade order. What influences have the issues of Genetic Science cast upon people living in the same Global village? Does controlling the genetic techniques suggest controlling the whole 'Genetic Era' in the future?

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We use optical fiber to access the net at school, and it has 100Mb capacity to store the homepage of our project and make the backup copy. The school network is communicated with optical fiber too. Most students access the net in the computer classroom at school during lunch break and use home computer to access the internet after school.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Object setting : we had several struggles on looking for the appropriate subject. Because we are interested in Gene, but we know not much about it. While start doing it, we realized that MFC actually is so commend. That was what we had never really thought about. Well, even though this subject really struggled us, but, undoubtedly, we did overcome it! Technique Problems: when we are planning about the simple survey question sheet, we thought it would be so “simple” as we thought. But actually there are so much more work to do, and we might not be able to finish the project on time. Fortunately, Mr. Haung created a really helpful software which help us finish this survey quickly and easy.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We participated “Doors to Diplomacy” website competition, Be Honest, we didn’t know about Gene Modified Technology at all, but now, we not only know about it in a certain level, we even get to know about basic financial policies between nations. After all those difficulties and troubles, we proved that we didn’t get defeated, we grew, and we went through it, Then now, we present it to people with pride as well.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1. We looked for data through school e-line information bank, and have a survey by having the students answer questions on line. According to the result, we found that didn’t really desire to know about GMF, but they also said that by doing that question sheet, they started want to learn some more about it. 2. During this activity, we learned to help, and trust each other, and always try to think more for other people. Every team members has their own duties, as long as they finish their jobs, our team work would get to be done efficiently and to the best we can. 3. In the result of this project get lots of different things involved, like financial, trade, Biology Tech, etc…we interviewed many pros for certain professional help. Really appreciated all the people who had ever helped us.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The information technology we use includes: email, telephone, MSN, recording pen, digital camera, DV recorder, scanner, computer software, related books, computer classrooms, media conference rooms, tours and the interviews. We distinguish them as the below:

Tools and technology used for Email, Telephone, MSN Communication at home to discuss, set up meetings, arrange activities and contact the interviewees. Computer classrooms, media conference Meetings and making homepage. DV recorder?recording pen and digital camera Getting and recording image, sound, photos. Scanner Saving the information and pictures.

Software and programs (FlashMX?Namo5.5?FrontPage2002?PhotoImpact8?CSS?HTML?JAVA etc.) Editing text and image and making the homepage.

Books and internet browser (IE6.0) Gathering information about ceramic art, reports on Mr. Wong, and how to create the homepage and Flash. Tours and interview Go to Yingge to interview Mr. Wong, and have Mr. Wong demonstrate how to make pottery and tour his facility.

When conducting the interview, we learned manners and ways to communicate. We also came up with questions to interact with the interviewee. We had to repeatedly locate coordination and change color arrangement when using Photoimpact 8 to design our homepage. It might sound easy but it requires plenty of practice, amendments, and hard work to accomplish. Using CSS was a challenge too. All these difficulties had puzzled us, but, thankful for the CyberFair, we eventually became very skillful of using the techniques. We leaned innovating tools and ways of creating homepage!

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We interviewed few people, asked for questions about Gene, and also hoped that they could offer us any more information or even pictures. Due to he has done this kind of interviewed before, therefore, when he got our invitation, he quickly contact us and helped us a lot. After so many times of interviews, we actually became friends! I think that’s so cool!

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We had a survey of how much do high school student know about GMF, in our surprise, these high school students didn’t really know or hear about GMF, and they neither try to understand more. Therefore, we felt that’s our mission to let people know more, not only tell them what is it, also find out whether those “rumors” about GMF are true or not. And where can we buy or see those GMF. We hope students can put more attention on GMF by giving them question to think about.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

When we were collecting data, Our school library Director helped us a lot, he found many many useful information my looking at school data bank. In addition, our school nurse also have us advice and some professional medical suggestions about Gene. Wow, she definitely is more than just a school nurse!

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In this research, we had the first glance to this amazing nature and the unbelievable modern technology which grow so fast that we might not realize. We certainly learned and understand about Gene Technology in advance. Stared to think about that whether Gene Tech would ever harm or even destroy our nature environment and creatures? So we know that we can’t only think about the positive side of Gene Modified Technology, we need to consider lot more things. And face all kinds of problem which Gene Tech caused. Is Gene Tech benefit or actually harming our environment? Scientist can’t sure either, but we, consumers need to face it, not keep silent.

At the same time, if there is any people being lazy, can make whole team work inefficiently, therefore, we planed every schedule carefully, and finished it step by step.
